While a lot of things have changed in the auto industry with the introduction of the all-electric Nissan Leaf, here’s one thing that hasn’t: Just the same way drivers of gasoline-powered vehicles occasionally find themselves out of of fuel and in need of roadside service, the same thing can happen to owners of the Leaf. So, in the same way traditional roadside assistance can handle an empty fuel tank by bringing along a few extra gallons of gas, Nissan is now working to make it just as easy for Leaf drivers to get back on the road: The automaker is teaming up with the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) to test service vehicles capable of recharging EVs without the need to tow them to a stationary charging point.
In fact, the first such vehicles, developed by Nissan and operated by the JAF, are already on duty in Japan. There, according to Masakazu Kume JAF executive director, they are helping “create an environment where motorists can drive EVs with the assurance that assistance is available” and supporting that country’s adoption of EVs as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional gas- or diesel-powered vehicles.

Currently, approximately 306 hybrid-electric (HEV) Nissan Altima units are in use as taxi cabs on New York City streets. However, the City’s Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) just approved the non-hybrid version of the Altima for use in New York City’s taxi cab fleet.
The Altima, a top-selling sedan in the United States, will be added to Nissan’s “Taxi of Tomorrow” program. Under this program, Nissan will supply the city with a new purpose-built taxi cabs based on the Nissan NV200 van.
As part of the Taxi of Tomorrow program, Nissan also will work with the City and taxi owners on a pilot program to study the use of zero-emission, electric vehicles as taxis. Nissan will provide up to six 100-percent electric Nissan Leafs to taxi owners for testing in 2012. The automaker will also provide charging stations to support their use.
“We’re excited about the expanded opportunity for New York taxi drivers and passengers to experience the Nissan Altima,” said Joe Castelli, Nissan’s vice president, Fleet & Commercial Vehicles. “We’re proud that Nissan was selected to provide New York City’s Taxi of Tomorrow and we’re focused now on delivering the safest, most comfortable and most convenient taxi ever to travel the City’s streets. While our work on that program is underway, we’re pleased that Nissan can increase its presence in today’s New York taxi fleet.”

If you find your self living anywhere where it gets pretty hot in the summer, you'll want to know what locals know about summer car safety. Having the right items--and never having the wrong items--in your vehicle will make driving in the heat a much safer and enjoyable experience.
If you ever park outside during the summer months, your car will heat up quickly. Heat coming in through the windows is absorbed by the interior, and the glass acts as an insulator. The temperature in your car get up to 200 degrees, depending on the temperature outside, the kind of vehicle you have, and how long it has been in the sun.

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and 4R Energy Corporation announced that the two companies have developed a charging system for electric vehicles that combines a solar power generation system with high-capacity lithium-ion batteries. Testing of this new charging system began today at Nissan's Global Headquarters in Yokohama.
With the new charging system, electricity is generated through solar cells installed at Nissan's Global Headquarters, and is stored in lithium-ion batteries which are equivalent to four units of Nissan LEAFs. With seven charging stations (three quick charge, four normal charge) located in the headquarter grounds, the total electricity that can be generated and stored is the equivalent to fully charging approximately 1,800 Nissan LEAFs annually.
